EVs powered by fossil fuels still result in less emissions than ICE vehicles, since the big turbines in power plants are more efficient than the tiny engine in a car. But walking or taking public transportation is of course a lot better than both.

That seems like it would violate the law of entropy by turning a high entropy state (water vapor mixed into the air) into a lower entropy state (water in liquid form), but I’m probably just missing something.

Might be a bit of an unpopular opinion, but I don’t really see a problem with brain implants. I wouldn’t put anything in my brain in a thousand years, but if someone’s willing to accept the risks, why not? They have the potential to significantly improve quality of life for many people.

I can’t imagine this would be effective at all. Assuming it uses GPS, big datacenters could simply spoof the GPS signal, and consumers could block the GPU from receiving the signal (a fully metal PC case is almost a Faraday cage already).

You can sideload any app on Android. Of course Google does a lot to push you towards using their store instead, but it’s still better than iOS where it’s just impossible.

How far do you have to be into the AI shit bubble to think everyone is cheating with AI? Some people are always going to cheat, but that’s been true since long before AI tools existed. Most people have some level of integrity and desire to actually learn from the classes they’re paying thousands to attend.

My best guess is they somehow mixed up minutes and seconds? Usually people mix up bits and bytes the other way and overestimate speeds.

I copy photos and videos off my phone all the time; it’s far more convenient than trying to send it over the internet. But even the “slow” speed of 480Mbps that they’re complaining about seems more than adequate; copying a few gigs of photos will only take a minute or two, and even copying my phone’s entire 128GB of storage would only take 35 minutes. Compared to most USB storage devices that’s blazingly fast.

Only Pro models support reasonable speeds for USB-C, up to 10Gbps. Regular iPhones are capped at USB 2.0 rates, up to 480Mbps, which is no faster than Lightning. With an iPhone 16 Pro, a 1GB file transfer can take 8 seconds – with a vanilla iPhone 16, you’re going to be waiting over 16 minutes.

…What? At 10Gbps a 1GB transfer takes under a second, while at 480Mbps it would take about 17 sec. Was this article written by AI or did the author just not care to actually do the math?

I had that too, closed the popup and never ran into anything even mildly broken during the entire course. Aside from the popup they don’t seem to be actively sabotaging Linux users, and it’s a website, so it’s gonna work pretty much identically on any OS as long as you’re using a common browser.

That said, they should definitely phrase the message more like “Your OS isn’t supported, so don’t expect help from us if something Linux-specific breaks our page” than “You need to get a different OS.”

This is the kind of AI that will change the world, not the word salad machines that burn through massive amounts of compute to sound kind of intelligent. The ability to train an AI model to identify problems is incredibly useful, whether it’s sewer blockages or cancer cells.

“AI-powered” and “20 foot robots” are not phrases that should be used in the same sentence. Also, surely leasing an autonomous robot for $20k a month is more expensive than leasing a regular machine and hiring a worker or two to operate it. Construction workers aren’t paid anywhere near $240k a year, and you’ll need someone with an emergency stop button watching the autonomous robot anyways.
