I used Plex for my home media for almost a year, then it stopped playing nice for reasons I gave up on diagnosing. While looking at alternatives, I found Jellyfin which is much more responsive, IMO, and the UI is much nicer as well.
It gets relegated to playing Fraggle Rock and Bluey on repeat for my kiddo these days, but I am absolutely in love with the software.
What are some other FOSS gems that are a better experience UX/UI-wise than their proprietary counterparts?
EDIT: Autocorrect turned something into “smaller” instead of what I meant it to be when I wrote this post, and I can’t remember what I meant for it to say so it got axed instead.
Yeah but Jellifin kinda sucks ngl
What do you mean? Its amazing for me
I’m still waiting for swiftfin to become more polished. Still has problems with HDR, language/subtitle selection and surround sound. Once that’s fixed I’ll switch but for now, plex is a bit more polished on my apple devices
For us, every time we skipped/rewind/fast forward the audio and/or subtitles would stop syncing correctly. This was the primary killer for us. Another issue was the lack of native apps. We have a Samsung TV that has a Plex app so it streams Plex without needing a separate device, while jellyfin had to be controlled directly at the server computer to do the same, like we couldnt select a new episode or move etc. Without walking back to the computer. Those two problems are really what made us go with Plex instead.
I get it. I have been using plex for years and its awesome, never had issues with it. For us, Jellifin is just a minor upgrade with no downsides
