The pace of change is about every five years, and some elements are always in transition.

All in one turn key solutions are always one to two cycles behind, so may work great with the stuff I’m already replacing.

I think these are honest attempts to simplify, but by the time they have it sorted its obsolete. If I have to build modules anyway to work with new equipemnt, might as well just write all the code in my native language.

These also tend to be attempts at all in one devices, requiring you to use devices only compatible with those subsystems. I want to be able to use best tech from what ever manufacturer. New and fancy almost always means a command line interface, which again means coding.

20 years ago at a trade show, a new module based visual coding tool was introduced in my field which claimed “You’ll never need another programmer”.

Oddly enough, I still have a job.

The tools have gotten better, but I still write code every day because procedural programming is still the best way to do things.

It is just now reaching the point that we can do some small to medium scale projects with plug and play systems, but only with very specific equipment and configurations.

I do like those, but can add my own easy enough.

I’m almost 50, and I can not think of two better peices of advice.

I don’t have kids, and when I was in school no one had phones, so I’m way out of the loop, but there were various electronic devices that could be a distraction. Portable music players, handheld games, even a graphing calculator in a non-math or science class, any one of these would have been confiscated if used during class.

I can not think of a single reason a student should have access to a phone during class that can’t be solved another way.

Do I remember it? No, but I was born very premature and required surgery, so was not circumcised at birth. Why my father told me this story over breakfast when I was like 10, and why he thought how I screamed and cried when I finally, as he put it, “Got my pencil sharpened” was funny, I’ll never know. Do I need therapy over it? No. Is it something I wish hadn’t happened? Yes.

It’s not, but it happens to males, so no one cares. I certianly wasn’t consulted about it, and have only been ridiculed when I’ve suggested it should have been my choice.

I have had a much better time w Skyrim mods than FO4 on the PS4 as far as stability goes.

I only have it on PS4, and yes there are lots of mods in the workshop. There are obviously limitations.

Every few months I try installing various mods to make what I want out of it, darker nights, flashlight mod, weapon and armour changes for a more hard core experience, etc, and end up with 15 or so mods installed.

Start a new hardcore mode, get just about past diamond city, and the game invariably starts crashing.

No idea which one or ones are causing the issue, and in the end I get annoyed and go play something else.

This is all fine and good till it’s a conflict between two specific mods. Damn you FO4 on PS4, why you gotta be like that?

Ubisoft made splinter cell, farcry 2, ghost recon, and rocksmith. They did a lot of good things over the years. Problem is, they’ve changed.

So do plenty of us older ones. I worked in a hospital state side, I wasn’t G.I. Joe.

I do about half and half remote, and i do work differently in office than when at home.

In office, i handle physical elements of the job, and also end up being interrupted far more often by user requests.

When I’m at home, I’m able to get into a groove programming, and am still about 90% as effective remotely handling user requests.

For me the mix is good, and when it comes to long term goals, my home time is far more productive.

Today for example the system I’m working on was scheduled for in office, but I decided to work from home. Turns out, facilities removed all the furniture from the room so I’d have been sitting on the floor or working on it remotely anyway.
