At least many of the media weren’t there to support trump. I’m sure at least some people were there to see the spectacle rather than support him. Should their value be disregarded as well just for being around the guy? I get the attitude that trump has asked for this. I don’t think it’s right to say everyone else there asked to be shot at too.

The basic problem I see is that we keep treating police like it’s their job to protect people and when they don’t we say, nah it’s ok, that’s not your job.

Bad take. If he’d gotten shot, the snipers would have immediately killed the shooter before he could reposition and take more shots. It would have saved a guy’s life and kept a former president from being shot, so definitely not pointless. And he likely had on body armor so he had a lot better chance of surviving than any of the people in the crowd did.

I don’t really get this take. I’ve seen the same people wanting stricter gun control and also saying this is a dumb law. Most responsible gun owners who are pro gun rights would agree that we don’t want drug addicts to have guns. Why isn’t this something people can all agree on? Admittedly, this is hypocritical as hell because police don’t bother to follow up on felons who own guns, and even infrequent marijuana use prohibits people from purchasing firearms. But, it’s just good sense for someone who is addicted to crack to not own guns.

Even with the details of this case, my understanding is that it all started because he was on drugs, and didn’t have his gun safely stored and his then girlfriend, also a drug user, took it and threw it in a trash can in a public place, which is an excellent reason not to let drug users have guns.

I work in a technical field, and the amount of bad work I see is way higher than you’d think. There are companies without anyone competent to do what they claim to do. Astonishingly, they make money at it and frequently don’t get caught. Sometimes they have to hire someone like me to fix their bad work when they do cause themselves actual problems, but that’s much less expensive than hiring qualified people in the first place. That’s probably where we’re headed with ais, and honestly it won’t be much different than things are now, except for the horrible dystopian nature of replacing people with machines. As time goes on they’ll get fed the corrections competent people make to their output and the number of competent people necessary will shrink and shrink, till the work product is good enough that they don’t care to get it corrected. Then there won’t be anyone getting paid to do the job, and because of ais black box nature we will completely lose the knowledge to perform the job in the first place.

I totally get it. I’m a parent and it screwed me up pretty bad and I still randomly think about it without any prompting. It’s shameful that it happened and it’s shameful that nothing will be done about it.

How are you getting that from what I wrote? I’m saying it’s a basic human instinct that when you hear a child in distress you find yourself moving toward that child, whether it’s yours or not. There were a lot of police there, and none of them acted on that instinct. I’m agreeing with you. It’s insane that none of those people, many if not most of whom were parents, acted on that natural instinct to protect children.

I find it particularly grim that their training must be excellent at subverting basic human emotions but apparently doesn’t do anything to help them actually protect and serve. It’s clearly effective, it’s just horrifying what they’re training them to be.

Ever been at a playground with your kid, and you hear a scream? Turns out it was someone else’s kid and they’re already on it but you’re already on your feet and so are half the parents there. It’s hard wired. Their training might not be good for keeping people safe, but it sure as hell must be good at subverting basic human instincts.

There’s a nuclear test site in Georgia where the us government did preliminary tests for a nuclear powered airplane. It was bat shit insane. It seems the idea was not to shield the reactor, but to only shield the crew, and rely on distance and speed to not irradiate basically everything else.

To that end, they built a nuclear reactor that could be hoisted in and out of a hole in the ground so that it could be run unshielded above ground. They tested the effects on all sorts of materials, and a huge swath of surrounding woods, including all the creatures there, which promptly died.

It’s now a recreational area, and considered generally safe, except for a few small, fenced off areas.

So my point is, watch what you wish for.
