I take adhd medicine in Germany that I also took in the US. In the US, I had to pay $50 for a doctor’s appointment, ~$200 for a drug test to make sure I was taking it and only it, and then $220 for one month of the generic brand. Then, when I hit my deductible in about June, the drug test was free, my appointment was $30, and the medication was $50. For this privilege, I paid $13k/year in premiums. In Germany, I get insurance for about €140/month while working part time at a bakery, then all my required appointments are free, no drug test, and I get two months of the brand name medication for under €16.

I was making over $60k/year in the US, not living in a major city. I now earn a few euros more than minimum wage at a part time job in Germany. Things are significantly more affordable here.

Nah, there’s no wood paneling!

I bought cutlery a few years ago and decided to get exactly what I wanted, not what was standard, and I not only ended up with golden-colored, wood handled cutlery that everyone else thought was hideous, I only got fully round spoons, in both teaspoon size and standard soup spoon size.

I loved that cutlery. My old roommate… gratefully tolerates it. I just have a giant mouth and never realized it could be an issue, but even the small ones were surprisingly unpopular

I think birth control is in a weird category here though, because it’s (generally) totally elective and there’s a bunch of different kinds that work differently for different people, so it’s probably pretty standard for people to have preferences about it in a way that they probably don’t for various types of, say, cholesterol medication.

I rejected my medical care provider’s (I think it was a nurse practitioner) advice because of what I saw in an ad, and it did not go well. They were incredibly offended that I had an opinion and dismissive of the idea that IUDs could lead to scarring, which I got from the ad itself. I didn’t end up with any birth control that day, but the next month, planned parenthood gave me the ring instead of a first generation copper IUD.

When patients are denied necessary care, they suffer. I would argue that this was not an act of revenge, because that would have been much more gruesome.

It would only make sense for him to turn himself in while accompanied by his lawyer after releasing a statement that he will be doing so. Even so, eventually he’s going to be alone in police custody and I’d be surprised if he survives that for long.

I think of the meme of first world problems as unimportant. Obesity is straight up killing people though, so I don’t know if it really fits. Especially because it’s so strongly inversely correlated with wealth. It’s literally a problem associated with living in the first world and being poor.

Don’t you know? People forfeit their right to not be raped when they commit crimes, because that’s not cruel or unusual or anything.

It’s natural for him to blame them fully, because he doesn’t want to blame himself. I don’t see this as crazy logic, he’s just in an incredibly difficult emotional state.
