i guess the point is not to brag - it’s to rattle the cage and yell “THIS IS NOT NORMAL” and “IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE LIKE THIS”

… there are lots of americans that just consider what they experience as normal, and that’s absolutely not normal for similarly privileged countries

… then you unionise and this forms part of your demands ;)

okay but that’s kinda the point… unlimited leave isn’t really that because nobody ever takes that leave… it’s not your fault: it’s literally designed to make you think it’s your fault… if you decided to take 2mo PTO i guarantee your “unlimited” PTO would suddenly not be unlimited

  • there’s certainly a camp in FOSS that considers “whatever you like including commercial activity” to be the one true valid version of “free software”

like… if someone wants to take an MIT project, add a bunch of extra features to it keeping some available only with payment, and contribute back bug fixes and some minor features etc, i wouldn’t necessarily say that’s harming the project and this is overall a good thing? it gets the original project more attention

like it’s perhaps a little unfair, but if the goal is quality and scope of the original project - or even broader of the goal is simply to have technology AVAILABLE even if it is with a few - then that goal has been met more with an MIT-like license than it would be with a copyleft license

  • also (australia here), i don’t think i’ve ever waited more than a week to see my specific doctor, and i can usually find someone that day if it’s urgent?

oh also i can call a number and get a doctor to come to my house in a few hours

also it’s all free (other than taxes, but i guarantee my taxes are cheaper than insurance!… and you can pay more for more luxury care - which the government subsidises the same amount)

… also also i still have private insurance for some “make life nicer” non-necessities
