As someone currently experiencing power loss in Tampa, i can state that I am not a company. Neither is my mom, who is also a customer of Tampa Electric, a family. Your entire comment thread on here is grabbing at an accurate statement and trying to turn it into something it’s not.
I think that, as someone that is directly affected, your comments are more insulting than the article.
You’re correct about the problem being flooding. The zones in Hillsborough county that were under evacuation orders were the low lying zones. I’m in one of those houses you speak of right now and Milton is currently about 50 miles away. I feel safe here. I know there may be some damage outside that I’ll have to fix, but I would have to do that regardless.
It probably also helps that my house isn’t in an evacuation zone, though there are houses in my neighborhood that are.
It’s looking like there was more storm surge with Helene. If Milton had hit 10-20 miles north though it would have been a toss up.
A lot of overlap from the flooding, more wind from Milton. I know a few people who have had to gut their houses already from Helene and expect it to flood again this week.
I know that Pixel 7’s and above support it. There are Reddit posts showing they have the feature already. Satellite messaging is just using standard 4G/LTE from Starlink. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is only an OS update away for most newer phones.
Looks like it’s been available on some android devices for at least a month. I don’t know about free though, I think it depends on your carrier. I know T-Mobile has been talking about supporting it using Starlink satellites.

New Caledonia is part of France, it’s not a different country. If you are a New Caledonian, you are a French citizen.
I get alerts on my Android for an Airtag I keep in my backpack all the time. My phone gives me the option to make the Airtag play a sound.
Probably not that deep. I’ve heard there are definitely discounts. That doesn’t count for much though when it still increases your cost 6x.
At first I thought this might be a hilarious dig on Canada since they haven’t won the cup since 1993… not sure if you’re serious.
To your point, geostationary satellites are in orbits around 22,300 miles away while Starlink is in a LEO orbit ~342 miles away. At the speed of light, that’s an additional quarter second round trip time minimum. Absolutely forever in internet speeds. My experience with GEO is a latency >550ms round trip. With the TCP/IP protocol built the way it is (aka, three-way handshake), a webpage wouldn’t even start downloading until almost 2 seconds have passed.
The military personnel will not be paid during the shutdown just like the government employees. DoD personnel that are emergency essential will have to keep working but that is a small fraction of the civilian workforce. Yes, everyone will be paid backpay (including furloughed civilians), but the point is that a lot of people cannot financially handle getting their paycheck late. Especially when there is no idea when the government will start back up.
Would you prefer the reporter refer to you as a family, company, or building…
The point being made here is that customer is the best noun that the English language has for a reporter to talk about a companies customers. This was never about an electric company referring to people. This is all some made up BS that is completely off topic to the article.
What should the AP have called all the customers of the utility companies other than customers?
